Shark Diver-“Noblesse Oblige”
There’s an old French saying “NoblesseOblige". It roughly translates in to Nobel Obligation. Those that are on the front lines of an issue and can effect change have a nobel obligation to do so. Which gets us to the state of commercial shark diving worldwide. The industry is valued at $200-300 million dollars and for the most part, operators are content to show divers sharks, make money and repeat. Without a doubt the current state of “NoblesseOblige"in our industry is at an all time low. Let me...

Sharkprotect.com-Jupp Kerckerinck
Jupp Kerckerinck-you probably do not know the name but you should get to know the website www.sharkprotect.com Outside a few well funded NGO’s and commercial shark diving operations few people have the time, energy and finances, to put into web projects that raise awareness and push for shark conservation. This is what makes Shark Protect so extraordinary. We’ll let Jupp explain how he came to create a world class shark conservation site and how he is now rapidly becoming a recognized name in th...

Terrible Day For Sharks
Mark Addison runs Blue Wilderness shark diving in theAilwal Shoal Marine Protected Area. Today was a dark day for Tiger shark conservation at that site as he and his team discovered three stunning animals caught in fisherman’s nets. One of the smaller animals was "rescued" by Mark but the blow to this dive site is something you cannot even begin to imagine. We’ll keep you updated as to the next steps to be taken here. Overall it’s been a tough week for sharks, highlighting the global need from A...

Octo-Podi-Don’t dump your meds in the ocean
This is what you get when you dump your expired meds into your sink a 96 armed sea critter (Octopus vulgaris). Note the helpful lab tech who’s pointing out one of the arms. Sadly this critter did not survive long at the ShimaMarineland Aquarium One alternate theory is that this fellow suffered a tragic accident and had a "gross regeneration event" causing the many arms....

Ensenada Fish Market, Mexico Y.O.Y
We blogged about this a few months ago-apparent white shark young of the year being sold at the Ensenada Fish Market as "swordfish and marlin". This month we ventured back down to the Ensenada Fish Market looking for evidence of more pups on sale. While we did not find any pups for the first time in three years, we did discover a series of shark carcass without skins being sold as "swordfish and marlin". Perhaps we made a difference, but we think not. Our contact in Ensenda who works with the lo...

Shark Trust Wines-Sharky Good Vino
Our friends at Shark Trust Wines asked us to provide a testimonial for their website. For the past few years we have fully supported the efforts of this scrappy little wine company to spread the word about sharks and shark conservation...oh, and it’s great wine as well: When we first "discovered" Shark Trust Wines I was excited about the prospects of a "wine company with a conscience". Traditionally wines focus on the message of the wine. Here was one that focused on the understanding and knowle...

Sand Tigers:Hit Men of The Aquarium
We have a lot of respect for big Aquariums. It`s not easy maintaining all that diverse underwater wildlife inside 300,000 gallons of saltwater. Ever tried to maintain a goldfish? Then again, you`ll have have to shake your head harder than a Sand Tiger with a fresh kill in it`s mouth when you see this next video. Yesterday at the Mall of America in the World`s Largest Underground Aquarium a Sand Tiger took out a perfectly good White Tip. We called Steve Blair assistant curator of the Aquarium of ...
