Adaptive Divers Benefit
Hobie - 9/09/2009 1:03 AM
The 3rd Annual Disabled Divers Benefit at Portage Quarry was a great success. The Winking Lizard provided all the food for the event, and it was fantastic. The unveiling of a new wheelchair friendly ramp and platform made the already number one quarry in Ohio even better. People in wheelchairs have always been able to dive Portage, but now it’s a little easier for them. Mid-Ohio Divers along with Columbus Scuba have put together a very good event. Ten dollars bought you an all you can eat BBQ, w...

Hobie - 8/18/2009 11:45 PM
Sammy had his liver surgery on Friday. The surgeons had to remove 85% of his liver. Sammy was cut from side to side across his abdomin. The doctors believe they removed all of the tumor. He did well thru the surgery. He completely bled out, and they had to completely refill his blood volume with donor blood. Donor blood is completely stripped of any nutrients, sugars, electrolites, and vitamins. It will take a few days for his body to start filling his blood with these things. If his sugar drops ...

Legends weekend at Portage Quarry,Ohio
Hobie - 8/13/2009 12:50 AM
Legends Weekend turned out to be the best event of the year. The weekend was full of great diving , as well as great people and lectures. The line up included Bob Meistrell, Dotie Frazier, and Robert Croft. The history behind these people was just unbelievable. They are all truly legends in the scuba diving community. All three of them are in their seventies and eighties. Being able to just sit, and listen to these pioneers tell of how things use to be was the highlite of the weekend for me. Dot...

He will then be kept sedated and on feeding tubes for a few weeks while he heals. I dont even know if they are going to do the surgery on the scheduled date. Here it is two days before, and I still dont know. On the 10th he had a hearing test, and we found out he is going deaf from the chemo. We were warned about the side effects r...

Last week was the start of round two of Sammy’s chemo treatments, and the hardest yet. He was admited into the hospital on Tuesday morning, and was able to come back to the room on Wensday evening. He has been sick all week from the treatments. On top of all that we find out today that our insurance is refusing to pay for his surgery. They told the surgeons office that there were hospitals closer to our home that could do the surgery for less. Im furious to say the least. I didnt know I had to sh...

Gilboa-World Record event
Hobie - 7/20/2009 11:31 PM
On Saturday July 18, divers from all over the country came together at Gilboa Quarry in Ohio to set a new world record, only to fall short. In 1996 a diving record was set off the coast of India, in the Indian ocean. The record was 978 divers submerged at the same time in the same area. Over a year ago, Mike and Judy Williams, owners of the Gilboa quarry took on the challenge of trying to break the record. They would of succeeded had some of the people who registered, and paid showed up. The fin...

Sammy just had his second chemo treament on the ninth of July. everything went well, then that night h started to get a fever so we had to go to the E.R.. After six hours they decided not to admit him. The E.R. nurse who tried to acess his port was not properly trained on the new style of acess lines she was using. She did not know she she had to take off the plastic piece to remove the wire to unblock the needle hole to push or pull any blood or medicine. So she pulls the acess line. I would no...
