Old Ponquogue Bridge Marine Park - Hampton Bays NY

Loading...
Old Ponquogue Bridge Marine Park is a shore accessible salt water dive site, located at South Bridge Approach; Dune Road, Hampton Bays, NY 11946. This dive site has an average rating of 3.64 out of 5 from 14 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 21-25ft/6-8m. The average visibility is 5-10ft/2-3m.

Located on the Northern flank of Fire Island just East of the New Ponquogue Bridge. Parking is contingent upon receipt of seasonal permit (May 1st - Labor Day). Boat ramp is available for waterway access. This is a shore dive and subject to tidal variation; best time to visit is just prior to slack high tide. A network of submerged cables provide underwater access in channel. Many interesting plant life and animals to see.

One of the best shore dives on long island. Depths avrg 16-21 ft under and around bridge with a few spots to 30. Lots of life, lots to see. Always something interesting going on. A good shore dive - Look to dive the top of high tide into slack. Depending on the phase of the moon you can get anywhere from 20 -45 mins avrge on a dive. I have had dives as long as 50 minutes.
Bottom is mixed sand, rock , debris from bridge and lots of mussel beds.

Parking permit required on south side of bridge in the summer. They do enforce it. Check local website for permit info

I went scuba diving here on 9/17/2013. Average viz: Under 5ft/2m. Water temp: 61-65°F/16-18°C.
1st Night Dive! High tide @ 7:25pm. Started at old bridge on south side, ended up at new bridge on south side. Stayed too long and the tide made us work hard to get back to where we wanted to be.

Night Dive:

I got some decent video on my little Kodak Play/sport waterproof camera.

It is rated to 3 meters, but I took it to 19’ with no ill effects (yet).
