Submerged rock pinnacle east of Cocos Island. This is the place to see HUNDREDS of Hammerhead sharks and THOUSANDS of Big Eye Jacks in giant schools. Also, there is a good likelyhood of swimming with one or more whale sharks! Advanced dive due to rough surface conditions, current, surge, and at times limited visibility. Water temps. between 73 and 75 F.
From SportDiver Planet’s 50 Greatest Dives, #14, In 1987, the Cousteau Society’s expedition ship Alcyone first visited Cocos, discovering a seamount that would eventually become the legendary site. Because it’s so far offshore, Alcyone offers incredible pelagic action. A quick descent to the top, which lies at 85 feet, is an unforgettable experience, with scalloped hammerhead sharks schooling above. Whale sharks, dolphins, tuna, giant mantas, mobula rays, eagle rays and marble rays swim by. The reef also provides plenty of action courtesy of critters like octopuses, eels and the endemic Cocos blenny. — Edwar Herreño
