U-869 - "The U-Who?" - NJ

Loading...
U-869 - "The U-Who?" is a boat accessible salt water dive site, located in NJ. The maximum depth is over 150ft/46m.

German submarine U-869 was a German Type IXC/40 U-boat of the Kriegsmarine during World War II whose wreck was discovered off the coast of New Jersey in 1991. Her keel was laid down April 5, 1943 by AG Weser of Bremen. She was commissioned on January 26, 1944 with Kapitänleutnant Hellmut Neuerburg in command. Neuerburg went down with his boat.

Depths of 240 feet, icy cold temperatures and tough currents make this dive both dangerous and remarkable—what’s waiting below makes it historic. In 1991 an American Diver discovered what was later identified as U-869, a German patrol boat used in WWII. After the initial discovery, 60 miles off the coast of New Jersey, it took several years and many more dives to verify the identity of the boat. Three divers lost their lives during that time. The dive site remains famous and treacherous to this day.
