Loading...
Wreck of El Aguila (El Aguilar) (The Eagle) is a boat accessible salt water dive site, located in Sandy Bay, Roatan, Honduras. This dive site has an average rating of 4.06 out of 5 from 16 scuba divers. The maximum depth is 101-110ft/31-34m. The average visibility is 81-90ft/25-27m.

This freighter that ran between Puerto Cortes Honduras and San Andres Island, sank around 1990 near Utila Keys, was salvaged by AKR and sunk at it’s present location.

230’ hulk, placed in 97, broken by Mitch in 1998 just forward of bridge sits upright on sand at 110’ surrounded by reef, large green moray under port bow, Garden Ells off stern.

Visited this site in February 2010. The wreck rests at 100’. The mast of the ship is at 50’. This wreck broke into three sections after Hurricane Wilma. There are now three swim throughs. Green eels are numerous. Very good dive! Dive was conducted by Coconut Tree Divers out of Roatan - very accomodating, very professional. Oh, forgot to mention - saw Eagle Rays on both dives

Have dove the site a number of times over the years. This is a great spot for groupers as mentioned and the green moray is very curious. We were able to do a swim through from the aft section to an opening close to the forward compartment. Not much to see inside but the forward bow is a great spot for a group photo.

AKR feeds the groupers there, so they show up right under your dive boat and they are pretty tame. The wreck 90-110 ft down, so every time I’ve been there it’s been with a group doing an adventure dive for AOW cert. I, personally, don’t think there is too much to see on the wreck itself, except sometimes a big green moray who lives there. The reef right beside the wreck is great. Swim throughs and lots of critters. One time, we were lucky enough to see two dolphins swimming back to the resorts!

We did our deep dive for our Advanced Open Water certification with Las Rocas Dive Resort here. The ship is actually at 110 feet. It sunk in 1997 according to the guides. Not a lot of growth on it as yet, but still really fun. It’s broken into three sections and has great windows. I heard there is often a king crab that sits on top of the mast. The grouper were friendly and we saw a good 4 foot barracuda inside the wreck. Poor guy had a big ole hook in him tho. :(

From my log; DM kneeled on sand next to wreck, picked up Conch and rung tank to show us, LARGE green moray ell thought the conch was for him, came from behind DM between his legs and scared the hell out of him!
