Bear wreck AKA SS Cotopaxi is a boat accessible salt water dive site, located in St. Augustine, FL. The maximum depth is 91-100ft/28-30m.
From Wiki; SS Cotopaxi was an Emergency Fleet Corporation (EFC) Design 1060 bulk carrier built for the United States Shipping Board (USSB) under the World War I emergency shipbuilding program. The ship, launched 15 November 1918, was named after the Cotopaxi stratovolcano of Ecuador. The ship arrived in Boston 22 December 1918 to begin operations for the USSB through 23 December 1919 when Cotopaxi was delivered to the Clinchfield Navigation Company under terms of sale.
On Nov. 29, 1925, the steam-powered vessel left Charleston, S.C. for Havana, Cuba. She never reached her destination and the bodies of the Cotopaxi’s 32 passengers were never recovered.
The discovery will be featured in the first episode of “Shipwreck Secrets,” a new Science Channel Series that premieres on Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. ET. Subsequent episodes will air on Sundays at 9 p.m. ET
No the ship was not found in the Gobi dessert as shown here in the 1977 film, Close Encounters of the third kind.
