If 3-stars is average, I’m giving it 2-stars (slightly below average, but not terrible).

Good: It’s a good place to meet other scuba-divers. I has carts for transporting equipment, tank fills, and bathrooms. It has platforms for training and a few minor attractions including about 5 small sculptures and about 3 boats, which are interesting once (but not super-interesting). The buoy’s keep most boats & fishermen away. There tend to be lots of fish near the platforms because divers feed them. It’s an okay spot for scuba-training, but challenging due to the visibility. The staff are friendly.

Not-great: There’s no weather or sun protection, only a few picnic tables, a couple bathrooms, and not much else. Visibility is often about 10ft, sometimes much less. There are zebra-mussels on everything, which are super-sharp. After diving, dragging your equipment uphill a moderate distance after a long day of diving sucks. Fills are about 20% above market-rates ($12 vs $10). I’ve heard about theft-problems. The entrance fee seems a little high for what you get ($10 weekday, $15 weekends).

Summary: It’s a continent spot from Austin for checking equipment, practicing skills, or training classes. Once you’ve seen the attractions, which you can do in about 2-dives, there’s nothing else to see. Personally, I’d rather dive the party-boat sites for sunglasses.

Pro Tip: Wear 3mm+ thick gloves and scrape the zebra-mussels off rocks with a knife or tool, and feed the muscles to the fish near the platforms. Just beware those mussels are very sharp & can slice up your gloves (or hands).

Over priced dive spot I agree.
JonG - 6/13/2021 3:03 PM
@aquaguy Now that I’ve explored divebuddy.com a little more, I think I’m might start diving the mansfield damn site ($5) instead for practice-dives and checking equipment. Although it seems like there ought be somewhere within a short driving distance from Austin, where you could park and dive for free, like a normal park with lake access.

awesome review. Greg used to teach out at Windy Point yeeaarrss ago and it was a great spot. Full of dive classes. Haven’t been back due to busy life/work but again, helpful review.

I went scuba diving here on 6/23/2019. Average viz: 11-15ft/3-5m. Water temp: 76-80°F/24-27°C.
Visibility could be better if divers would stay off the bottom, but good luck with that right?
evermanwa - 6/24/2019 9:00 AM
Dove here on 6/23/2019 - Visibility was awful due to how many divers were kicking up the bottom. 82 on the surface, 60 degrees at 135 ft. Ropes/Chains have been moved around by some disrespectful divers, so the course is different.

After the floods and dam releases, Richard Barstow and Windy Point is not fully operational yet. That was the report on Nov 12 from FB lake Travis Divers. He let a few divers in and they reported 0 Viz. Opinion was lake needs to settle.

I dove here on 7/24/18. Lake was at 67% so it was pretty low. Surface temp was around 86, almost too warm for my 3mm. At 41’ I hit the thermocline; temp went down to 62. Vis was 12-15 and goes up a bit as you go deeper. A lot of fish, especially if you bring hot dogs to feed them. Quite a bit to see, several platforms and boats. It gets deep quick, but still a good place for non-divers to swim and snorkel.

I dove here the last 2 years in July it gets better ever time. Looking forward to 2 dives off the Giant stride then 1 or 2 more from the Park. I like that there is a compressor on site to get my tanks filled.. 2016 the viz was 20 to 30 feet.
