Mike M., Joel and myself conducted a Try Scuba Experience for 25 Boy Scouts at the Massillon Perry pool on Saturday. Complicating matters was the open swim going on when we first got there, and then the birthday party that began about half way through. Fortunately, the lifeguards on duty were some of my boys swim team members at Perry HS and they kept the crowd pretty well under control, and two of my former Open Water students were helping to run the birthday party, so that worked out well.
We were underwater for the better part of three hours that day, breaking the scouts into three groups of 8-10 participants. We had all kinds of hula hoops for the kids to swim through, toy-pedos and underwater frisbees to play with, and Mike M. even brought Nemo along to swim with us until Nemos batteries conked out.
As if that wasn’t enough, during our Sea-U-Dive pool dive the next day, Mike M. and Brad took four more people into the pool for another Try Scuba. All in all, I think we will probably have hooked about six new students and maybe more. We’ll probably have to conduct an exclusively Junior Diver class for the scouts.
