I am being stationed in Hawaii (Oahu, Fort Shafter). I am looking for any advice for good places to dive, dive shops to hook up with, etc. Shore diving, boat diving, etc. You name it I need the details. I will have 3 years to see and dive it all. I am scheduled to arrive in early January 2010.

Also, any places to avoid both diving and living. Any other input is appreciated too.Thanks.

First of all, you do realize that you’re going to one of the best Army assignments available? I was stationed at Shafter from 90 to 94. Did lots of diving, mostly shore. The north shore offers sites such as Shark’s Cove with fantastic swim throughs and caverns, Three Tables (right next to Shark’s Cove), and Halieva (spelling) Trench, a really nice and easily accessable wall dive. Down south you have Pray for Sex, Electric Beach, Eternity Beach, Waikiki Beach (a really cool night dive). These are just a few I remember off the top of my head. As far as dive shops, I too can highly recommend Aaron’s. They are good people. If you would like more info on Ft Shafter, the surrounding area, and diving, send me a PM. I live about 15 minutes north of Belton and dive a lot at Stillhouse and Travis. Give me a hollar and congrats on the assignment. Man, I am jealous!

Island Divers are also a great crew to dive with and are close to the shaft. They have their own boat and I know the guys there and they are cool.

Charles, a dive buddy of mine just moved there this past May and he is currently working for Maui Divers. He tells me that most of the dive companies there do alot of tourist snorkleing than diving. Troy is a good friend of mine and someone i would trust with my life, certainly his opinion! When you get there you may want to seek him out even though he’s only been there since May.

I would also strongly recommend Aaron’s Dive Shop ( http://www.hawaii-scuba.com/index.php) on Oahu, I just had a vacation in Hawaii and dove with Aaron’s on 3 separate days and 3 different sites, The Sea Tiger, The YO-257, and the Corsair. All 3 were great dives and the staff at Aaron’s was super friendly AND they offered a military / veteran’s discount to me and my dive buddy (ret. US Army). If I recall, they also gave us Nitrox for free since we did 3 straight days with them. You will love diving with them.

Lots of cool places to dive in Oahu! You’ll be there for 3 years , so you’ll have plenty of time to find the cool dive spots. You’ll end up diving with many different shops if you want to dive all over the island. Look up dive sites on this website, lots listed for Oahu. I’ve got about 40 dives in the southwest area of Oahu. (mostly with Aquazone in Waikiki) They leave out of Hawaii Kai. But be sure to check out........Sea caves outside of Hanauma Bay, Kahala Barges (all are cool, but baby barge is cool coz there is a ledge with small cave off to the side of the barge. and usually turtles or sharks inside),War World II Cossair, Fantasy reef, Koko crates (ALWAYS turtles there), Sea Tiger Wreck, If your shore diving, be sure not to leave anything important or expensive in you car. (especially if you out in the middle of nowhere) Coz it might not be there when you get back. Enjoy!

Stop the PX and talk to the guys from DiveOahu http://www.diveoahu.com/ They have a great boat. Or Aaron’s Dive Shop in Kailua http://www.hawaii-scuba.com/ or maybe this page will help http://www.hawaiiscubadiving.com/oahu/dive-companies.html Good Luck
