Dan - PADI Divemaster; certified Open Water in 1986, lots and lots of dives logged ranging from springs, wrecks, reefs, drifts, walls, night... probably more I’m leaving out. One of these days, time and money permitting, I would like to try spearfishing, photography, and some real wrecks among other things. Most frequented dives: Morrison Springs, the jetties at St. Andrews State Park, and inshore wrecks, reefs, and sunken bridge spans out of Panama City Beach. Spent a week diving in the Turks and Caicos with Fifi and Caicos Adventures. Can’t wait to take a nice week long trip to the Keys, or even better, Bonaire, Belize, or just about anywhere in the world that’s tropical, and has breath taking reef systems!

Missy - certified OW with PADI in 2011, has 40+ dives logged and is loving it. Becoming a regular mermaid!

Danielkent - 9/13/2013 3:49 PM Morrison Springs Updated: I called the Walton County Florida folks and Janice told me that it wasn’t closed anymore, but there is still a bacteria warning. Don’t drink the water, and shower good after a swim... as far as diving it, it’s still "muddy and stained," she reported. Now, I’ve dove it before when it was really high over the banks and stained and once you get below the brown, it’s clear as can be and is almost ethereal the way the light comes through. Probably won’t go tomorrow though, I want that good old crystal clear Morrison experience.

Danielkent - 7/29/2013 3:29 PM Yeah, it’s been a mess lately. We’ve had more rain than necessary and it’s been the wettest summer in decades if not on record. Tides are all out of whack too. We had a nip-tide Saturday and now the high tides are in the wee hours of the morning, so unless you want to do a night dive, you can’t make the "1 hour prior to high tide" rule work. And with the stained water, there’s no guarantee on the vis even then. So, you’ve basically got two choices: Vortex Springs near Ponce de Leon, Florida, is a freshwater spring, 68d temp water year round, and is basically near gin-clear since they have some apparatus to clear out the tannic acid that has invaded all of our waters. It’s $25 per person to dive there, not included... very commercialized, and that doesn’t include air. I’d read up on it before going if I were you and call them to verify water clarity. All the other springs are closed because of run-off and bacteria levels. Second choice is to bite the financial bullet and call Cap. Pat and the crew of Panama City Diving (just changed their name from Panama City Dive Charters) - 850-588-8077, and go out to sea. There’s some GREAT dives out there and they know where the vis is good. They told us the Black Bart was nearing 30’ of visibility even today. I was there on monday and as crowded as it was, we had no tangled lines and the divers were all very supportive for other people. Sorry your time wasnt as fun as it could of been. Alpha male territorial-ism over every square inch in the pavilions: Just a note, diving is about community, buddies, and helping each other out. If you have "claimed" a table near a dive site, be nice and allow other folk a place to pack up if you have the space. Share the sea, share the site, share an o-ring, share air... pay it forward.
