I’d strongly recommend getting pair of "wreck" gloves. They are thin leather usually and their function is not to insulate from cold but protect your hands from getting sliced up on sharp objects. They don’t cost much. Scubatoys may keep them in stock. Non-diving leather gloves like Mechanix gloves may work as long as they have a strap to fasten them tightly around you wrist so they won’t fall off UW. You might have something like that just lying around.
